The Many Paths of Pagan Activism

The Magick of Travel

Invoking Buffy

Kill the stereotypes. In our first year of publication, newWitch has mostly gotten past the "witches have warts on their nose and turn folks into frogs" riff. But that stereotype has come to be replaced by others, and although the new batch is less likely to get anyone toasted at a stake it's still annoying to be stuck in a box that just doesn't fit.

One such stereotype is that all Witches are weirdos. The Science Fiction Channel is developing a new reality TV show; they're calling it Wacko House or some such nonsense, and the plan is to fill it with people who have outré lifestyles and then drop "normal" people into the mix and try to see if the weirdos can convert them. (To what?) The press release said that they wanted a "real witch." And not just any witch, either; the successful applicant needed to be a "24-hour-a-day witch." No "witches by night, bankers by day" need apply. Apparently, real Witches have to wear 17 pounds of mascara, have long straggly hair and black curled Fu Manchu fingernails. NOT.

And then there's gender stereotyping. No, Virginia, all Witches are not female. Then, of course, there's several other stereotypes: All Witches are politically liberal; all Witches live on the East or West coast and are Vegan or vegetarian. Again, NOT. There are active military Witches, gay Witches, monogamist Witches, even Republican Witches.

We, of all people should understand that "should be" and "must be" and "always are" are lies; isn't that why most of us came to this path in the first place? - for the right to choose, the right to be free of stereotypes and other people's definitions, and the right to be what we are, without fear, without lying to ourselves? Who are the real Witches? We are. Because we believe we can be.
